Spark Joy This Lag B’Omer: Family-Friendly Ideas to Celebrate Together

By Gabrielle Burger & Laura Wilson

Lag B’Omer, the 33rd day of the Omer, is a joyful break during the solemn period between Passover and Shavuot. This year Lag B’Omer begins at sundown on Thursday, May 15, 2025, and ends at nightfall on Friday, May 16, 2025. It commemorates the end of a plague that affected Rabbi Akiva’s students and honors the mystical teachings of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai. Traditionally marked with bonfires, outdoor fun, music, and unity, Lag B’Omer is the perfect chance to bring families together for a meaningful, lighthearted celebration.

Whether you’re up for an outdoor adventure or a cozy night in, here are some fun and family-friendly ways to celebrate Lag B’Omer.

Outdoor Adventures for the Whole Family

Backyard Bonfire or Campfire Substitute
No bonfire? No problem! A fire pit or even a cluster of candles can do the trick. Make it festive with s’mores, singing, and storytelling. Bonus idea: Talk about how light brings warmth and unity—just like the teachings of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai.

Picnic in the Park
Pack up your favorite snacks and head outdoors. Bring along a Lag B’Omer-themed scavenger hunt (find something round like a bow, something that burns like fire, something that grows like wisdom…).

DIY Archery or Target Games
Traditionally, children played with bows and arrows to symbolize strength and spiritual focus. You can make safe versions at home with pool noodles, paper straws, or sponge darts.

Creative Crafts & DIY Fun

Mini Bonfire Craft
Using twigs, tissue paper, or even Legos, kids can create their own little campfire to “light up” the day indoors.

Make Your Own Bow & Arrow Set
Try popsicle sticks and yarn for a fun (non-pointy!) version of this classic tradition, reminding us of brave Jews who stood up for their beliefs.

Lag B’Omer Crowns or Capes
Let your kids transform into mystical heroes or nature adventurers with dress-up gear that they decorate themselves.

Build a Cozy Cave Inside
Set up couch cushions, pillows and chairs. Drape sheets and blankets to create your own “cave”. Tell stories or read your favorite PJ Library book together.

Music, Movement & Storytime

Family Dance Party
Create a Lag B’Omer playlist filled with upbeat Israeli songs or camp favorites and let loose.

Campfire Storytime
Share age appropriate versions of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai’s story and Jewish tales that emphasize resilience, learning, and light.

Drum Circle or Rhythm Game
Use pots, pans, or toy instruments to get the whole family involved in a joyful beat!

Teach Jewish Values Through Play

Kindness Challenge
Create a “33 Acts of Kindness” checklist with your kids to honor the day and practice empathy.

Teamwork Games
Try a cooperative building challenge or a family art project where everyone contributes.

Nature Walk with Purpose
Pick up litter, plant a flower, or share words of gratitude while you explore the outdoors.

Reflect & Wind Down

As the day ends, take a moment to reflect. Go around the family circle and ask, “What was your favorite part of today?” End with a simple bedtime blessing or a story that ties it all together. PJ Library offers a great family guide to help spark discussions.

Final Sparks of Inspiration

Lag B’Omer is a chance to connect—with nature, with Jewish stories, and with one another. However you celebrate, may it be filled with light, laughter, and lasting memories.
