self care, or shmirat ha’guf

What does Judaism have to say about self care, or shmirat ha’guf?

The Hebrew term shmirat ha’guf can be translated to “guarding” or “caring for the body.” Among the 613 commandments, or mitzvot, that guide Jewish practice, taking care of our health and well-being is one of them (Deuteronomy 4:9). It reminds us of the importance of nurturing our bodies, which serve as vessels for our souls. Speaking of souls, our neshama, they too reflect the divine image of God in which they were created.

Why are these projects important?

Taking care of ourselves goes beyond maintaining our personal appearance; it also involves nurturing our image of God within us. There’s a Hebrew phrase, b’tzelem elokim, which means “in the image of God.” The Torah reminds us that all human beings are created in the divine image, emphasizing the significance of upholding and reflecting that image (Genesis 1:27).

In line with this understanding, this season’s projects focus on creating Kids Oral Hygiene Kits and Laundry Kits. These kits are carefully crafted with various materials that may be challenging for those living in poverty to access. While items like toothbrushes, toothpaste, and detergent may seem readily available to many of us, these projects aim to provide essential care for those in need. By contributing to these projects, we can extend a helping hand to individuals who might otherwise struggle to care for themselves.
