Meet Lyz Levine: Crafting Connection, One Stitch At A Time

For Lyz Levine, a love of crafting has become a meaningful way to connect with Jewish community. As a Knit & Nosh VolunTeam Leader with The Network, she’s bringing people together to create, volunteer, and give back.

But Lyz’s love of knitting started long before she began volunteering. In fact, it goes all the way back to childhood and a special connection with her grammie.

A Lifelong Love of Creating

Lyz learned to knit from her grammie when she was just 8 years old, and she hasn’t put down the needles since.

Today, her creative interests go far beyond knitting. She also crochets, sews, does macramé, beads, and mats photos. Most of all, she loves getting creative with her children and sharing that part of herself with them.

“I have not yet gotten into needlepoint, but I have a vision of making my children’s b’nai mitzvah tallitot, so I’ll probably start soon,” she says.

For Lyz, crafting is more than a hobby. It’s something that connects generations, creates memories, and gives her a way to share what she loves with others.

Turning a Hobby Into a Way to Give Back

Eventually, all that knitting created one small problem.

“My husband has lovingly forbidden me from knitting more hats for our home, so I’ve had to turn my efforts to my community!” Lyz jokes.

That turned out to be a pretty great solution.

Last year, Lyz began knitting hats with a group of Bubbies. She then helped pack the handmade hats during The Network’s Mitzvah Month. The experience gave her a new way to use her creativity while giving back.

Now, she’s taking on a new role as a Knit & Nosh VolunTeam Leader. This time, Lyz is helping bring together a younger group of volunteers to knit for the community.

It’s a chance to make something meaningful, meet new people, and make an impact at the same time.

Jewish Traditions Across Generations

That connection between past and present also shows up in Lyz’s Jewish life.

Her favorite holiday is Passover, in part because of the generations of people who have shared the same traditions.

“I feel so deeply connected to my family and ancestors knowing we have all sat around our family tables recounting the same seder,” she says.

She experiences that same sense of connection when she hears the shofar.

“I always think how cool it is to know so many generations before me have heard that same sound, all the way back to the Exodus!”

For Lyz, those moments are reminders that Jewish traditions can connect us not only with the people around us today, but also with those who came before us.

And, Of Course, We Had to Ask About Her Bagel Order

When it comes to bagels, Lyz doesn’t mess around.

Her go-to order is an everything bagel, toasted and open-faced, with chive cream cheese, tomato, onion, nova, and Muenster cheese.

But her favorite bagel is actually pumpernickel. The reason? Just like her love of knitting, it brings her back to someone special.

It reminds her of her grandmother.

Creating Connection, One Stitch at a Time

Today, Lyz is carrying those connections forward in her own way. Through Knit & Nosh, she’s sharing something she loves while creating opportunities for others to connect and make a difference.

Whether she’s knitting for the community, crafting with her children, or celebrating traditions passed down through generations, Lyz shows how the things we love can become meaningful ways to find our people and our place.
