At just 9 years old, Asher Goldberg is already counting down the days until he heads back to Camp Airy for his second summer. A rising fourth grader, Asher spent two weeks at the all-boys camp in Northern Maryland last year. This summer, he’s doubling the fun and staying for four weeks.
From favorite activities to packing must-haves, Asher shared what he loves most about camp—and why he thinks other kids should give it a try, too.
Asher is most excited to reconnect with friends and jump back into all the activities camp has to offer. For him, camp is about both adventure and friendship.
“There’s always something fun to do,” he shared.
When it comes to packing, Asher has strong opinions. His top five camp essentials are:
Choosing a favorite activity is not easy for Asher. He loves baseball because he has been passionate about the sport for as long as he can remember. He enjoys both playing and watching the game.
He also likes archery because of the skill and focus it takes. But if he had to choose just one favorite, go-carts might take the top spot.
“They’re fast and really fun,” he said.
One of Asher’s favorite camp traditions is color war. He loves the energy, teamwork, and friendly competition.
If he could give advice to a first-time camper, it would be simple: don’t stress about winning every game.
“Camp is about having fun and trying new things,” Asher explained.
Some of Asher’s camp memories already sound unforgettable. One standout moment was riding scooters at the skate park, landing a 360, and having a friend jump over him.
Another favorite memory was when his counselor was chosen to lead the green team during color war. Even though the team did not win, everyone was excited to cheer him on.
At canteen, Asher already knows exactly what snack he’ll be picking: a strawberry Charleston Chew.
When it comes time to write letters home, his parents will be first on the list. After that, he plans to write to his aunt, uncle, cousins, and grandma.
Asher says camp is a great experience for kids who want to try new things, make friends, and have fun. As summer gets closer, it’s safe to say he’s more than ready to head back to Camp Airy.
