Meet the Birenbaum Family: PJ Library’s Mishpacha of the Month!

The Birenbaum family — Michele and Dan, along with their daughters Emily (7) and Isabelle (5) — fill their Reisterstown home with warmth, tradition, and an unmistakable love for Judaism, Israel, and Jewish learning. Their home is lively not only with two young daughters, but also with three beloved dogs: Honey, Goldie, and Maple.

Michele grew up in Pittsburgh, and Dan was raised in Baltimore. They met in college, got engaged, and built their life together in Baltimore. Today, Dan is a mechanical engineer at Michael Baker International, and Michele is a nurse specializing in utilization review at the Eating Recovery Center. As part of The Network’s Momentum cohort, Michele traveled to Israel in November — an experience that continues to inspire the family’s connection to Judaism and Israel at home.

The family belongs to Beth Tfiloh Congregation and keeps a kosher home. Shabbat is a weekly highlight, with Dan and the girls picking out ingredients, followed by candle lighting, challah, and family dinners. They’ve recently added Havdalah to their routine, bringing even more meaning to their week.

Their connection to Judaism and Israel is especially strong. After October 7, Emily taught Isabelle “Hatikvah,” and the sisters sang it together again and again — a moment their family will always hold close.

They especially love celebrating Passover and Chanukah. Chanukah includes each family member lighting their own menorah, while Passover is all about preparing and hosting together, with the girls eagerly helping every step of the way.

The Birenbaums enjoy attending PJ Library events and reading PJ Library books. Some of their favorite stories include Little Red Ruthie and Estie the Mensch, both of which they read time and time again. These stories reinforce Jewish values while creating special bedtime moments.

Favorite family movies include Home Alone, The Addams Family, and K-Pop Demon Hunters. They love playing Close the Box and Mario Kart, and visiting the National Aquarium and Round1 Arcade.

Filled with intention, joy, and pride, the Birenbaum family brings Jewish life into their everyday moments. The Network and PJ Library is proud to be part of their journey.
