Meet Rachel Plotkin

For moms of teens who are finding a little more breathing room and a lot more curiosity about what’s next, Sip and Stitch offers a cozy place to land. Led by Rachel Plotkin, local Jewish communal professional, this gathering brings together moms of teens (age 14+) to connect over coffee or drinks while knitting and crocheting hats and scarves to donate to those in need. It’s about creativity, giving back and building real connection during a meaningful in-between season of life.

How did you get connected with The Network, and why did you want to start Sip & Stitch?

As a Jewish professional, I was already familiar with the Network and the many meaningful ways it connects people across our community. I wanted to start Sip and Stitch because I saw a need for parents who are “in-betweeners” not quite empty nesters, but at a stage where their children need them a little less and they finally have time to do something for themselves.

Many of my friends (and people I know) knit — or are just as happy to spend time with those who do — so Sip and Stitch felt like a natural and fun way to come together, sip some wine, create, and connect.

What advice would you give to someone new to this community?

Sip and Stitch is just getting started, we’ve only held one event so far, but hoping for more to come. If you’re a parent who isn’t quite an empty nester or part of a 55+ group, Sip and Stitch may be just what you’re looking for.

We welcome anyone who finds themselves in that in-between stage, where your kids still need you sometimes, and you’re also beginning to rediscover who you are beyond being someone’s mom.

Favorite Jewish song, book, or holiday?

My favorite Jewish Holiday is Passover. My family has always had big Seders and once I started hosting one night my husband and I did themed Seders, like game night Seder, Seder with skits and my personal favorite Color War Seder.
